Bran

This is the latest portrait to come off my easel. It is of Bran, the beautiful mixed collie shepherd dog. She was rescued by her family when 6 months old and stayed with them for 15 years. She was very special to them and so they commissioned Bran’s portrait with me as a keepsake.

They were very happy with the result and I was just honored to work on such a special portrait. The reference photos were excellent. They were taken outside on a lovely day. It is a beach setting, which is wonderful (I have a thing for beaches so I was very excited to work on this painting :)). We decided to choose a profile image of Bran. I think it really captured her good nature and gentle character.

I suggested a wide landscape format, 40 x 20 cm in size. It captured just enough background without overpowering Bran in the centre of the composition. I worked in the detail in Bran’s fur with small brushes. It is a sunny scene, so the shadows are quite deep in tone. The basis of my palette were burnt umber, venetian red and yellow ochre. For contrast I used cerulean blue and ultramarine. It was important to capture the warmth of the sun in the image. I took some pictures of the finished canvas on the wall, together with some progress images as I was painting.

Monty and Chances – collie and labrador drawing

I completed this drawing in the last couple of days. It is of two lovely dogs called Monty and Chances – a black collie and a golden labrador. The portrait was commissioned as a 60th birthday present for the client’s friend. The drawing was drawn with graphite pencils on Fabriano 5 paper. I used Faber-Castell and Staedtler pencils 2B, 4B and 6B. The portrait is 20 x 40 cm in size which is a lovely wide landscape format.

I am also including some close-up images of each dog and reference photographs. The photos were a little blurred but I hope I still captured the likeness and essence of each dog.

Lucy and Cody

I completed this portrait last week. It is of two brown and white springer spaniels named Lucy and Cody. Lucy, Cody’s mother, is on the left and Cody is on the right. This portrait was commissioned as a present for the client’s partner. It is 50 x 50 cm in size and I worked with acrylics on stretched canvas. I used larger brushes for this portrait to create a looser painting with some expressive brush strokes. Smaller brushes were then used for the details on the dogs’ faces. I scanned the painting and I am including a detail of each dog.

She was delighted with the painting:

I am lost for words, it’s the exact same as them. They are my mothers 3rd and 4th children she never had so they are her babys haha. She will love it. Thank you for all your work on it. It’s unbelievable how much it looks like them. She will love it, by far the best Christmas present I’ve ever got her.

The reference photos were very good with good lighting coming from the right.

Happy New Year

First of all I would like to wish all of you who follow my blog and enjoy my artwork a very Happy New Year 2017. I hope it is filled with motivation and good luck.

I was very busy this Christmas and there were a lot of commissions that were surprises so I had to keep away from the blog and deprive all of you of all the new work. But since everybody has since received their presents, I am allowed to post all of them here. I will do so over the next few days and I hope you will like them.

dalmatians coloured pencil drawing

I will start with Trigger and Archer. They are two long haired dalmatians, one chewing all the time, the other running all the time. It was quite a challenge for my client take pictures of them, but she managed to provide me with some really lovely photos. They look just beautiful here, patiently waiting for their command (or possibly just a treat:)). The drawing was drawn with coloured pencil, at 25 x 25 cm. I am including the reference photo too.

Isa and Darcy cavachons portrait

This is one of the many Christmas commissions this year. It is of two cavachons called Isa and Darcy. The painting is 50 x 60 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I had lovely reference photos to work from for this one. It makes all the difference when painting. There was good lighting coming from the left and there was lots of detail in both dogs’s faces. I had a lot of work painting all the curls 🙂

Above is a scan of the painting. I also took some photographs which show the light in the painting a bit better.

Three dogs portrait

I have completed this portrait a week ago. It is painted on two square canvases, each 25 x 25 cm in size. I worked on them both at the same time so they can be hung together. It was a surprise birthday gift so I waited a little with the blog post. I didn’t want to spoil the surprise 🙂

The dogs pictured are Puddles the Jack Russell on one canvas and Rizzo and Scuddles the Chihuahuas on the other canvas. I worked with acrylics on stretched canvas as usual. I am including some progress images together with some photos of the finished paintings.

Meet Holly

I received this photograph from a client I recently drew a portrait for. Holly is the beagle sitting beside the portrait. It is lovely to see Holly beside her image in the drawing. I am including some photographs of the mounted drawing.
