I worked on this painting a couple of weeks ago. It is of a springer spaniel called Grouse. He is a much loved family pet and the client has commissioned his portrait as a Christmas present.
The painting was 30 x 30 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I added a landscape background the client chose. This worked really well I thought. It added some depth in the painting and I could really push Grouse to the front.
I took lots of photos when I was painting and of the finished portrait.
I received a lovely email from one of my clients. He commissioned the portrait of Mini, the lovely yorkie.
Hi Ivana, I’m sorry that I have not been in contact before this. I got the painting delivered to my parent’s house and only saw it yesterday. It is really beautiful and captures Mini perfectly.
I gave the painting to Lorraine last night and she was totally blown away by it. She thinks it is just amazing and got very emotional looking at it. Mini was her first dog and although we now have 4 dogs Mini will always have a special place in Lorraine’s heart so thank you very much for such a beautiful job.
We will have to get a group painting of the 4 dogs next time!
Best wishes, Aaron
This is Mini, the yorkshire terrier. I worked on her portrait just a week ago. The client commissioned this painting as a Christmas present for his wife. I loved the photograph the client provided for this portrait. The red cushion in the background added a lovely warm contrast to the whites and greys of Mini’s fur. I detailed Mini’s head and worked the rest of the painting more loosely. The painting was 30 x 40 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas.
The client was very happy with the painting:
Hi Ivana, Thank you so much, it is perfect. It really captures Mini. I know Lorraine will love it. Aaron
I took some photographs of the painting in progress and of the finished canvas.
This is Lassie, the lovely black, white and brown collie. This is the second portrait for the same client. Lassie has sadly passed away and the client wanted a portrait of him as a Christmas present.
The painting is 25×25 cm in size painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I added some shaded background to add some mood to the painting. I love the way Lassie is looking up at the camera. I scanned the painting and took some photos of the progress and the finished painting.
This is a project I worked on in August. It is of two lovely dogs called Henri and Shadow. Henri passed away and his owner misses him terribly. He was a jack russell terrier. Shadow is a shetland sheepdog. The portraits were commissioned as birthday presents for the dog owners who are twin sisters. The whole family have decided to surprise them with the paintings. The portraits were the same size of 40 x 40 cm and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I worked from photos provided by the clients.
The reference photo for Henri’s portrait was his owner’s favourite photo and the client was very keen to include the basket and blanket in the portrait. We opted for a simple shaded background as there was a lot happening in the painting.
Shadow’s portrait was adjusted a little more from the reference photo. The clients wanted a landscape background because Shadow loves his walks. I added some out of focus trees to the back and a grass meadow.
I completed this drawing a few weeks ago and received a lovely phone call from the recipient of the portrait. She was delighted with the portrait of her two dogs, Annie and George. Annie is the wheaten terrier and George is a St Bernard dog. It was so lovely to hear she liked it so much and knowing that I captured each character on paper. It was commissioned by her sister as a birthday present. The drawing is 20 x 30cm in size and drawn with graphite pencils on Fabriano 5 paper. After testing other brands of pencils, I am back using Staedtler Lumograph as I think they are the best for darkness. I am light handed when I draw so I use soft pencils for shading, to create a darker drawing overall.
I took a photo of the drawing in a mount, just before it was collected. I am also including some close-up images of each of the dogs and client reference photos.
This a painting of Lola and Bear, two lovely pomeranian crosses. Lola is 13 years old and Bear is 12. Bear was the last puppy of Lola’s last litter. The client commissioned this portrait for her boyfriend who just loves them both. It was a present for his big birthday.
The client was very happy with the result and wrote a lovely email when she received the painting:
Hi Ivana, Just to let you know I received the painting & it’s really fabulous, I love it. I know my boyfriend will love it too when he gets it for his birthday. Thank you so much. Eimear
The painting was painted with acrylics on stretched canvas 35 x 45 cm in size. I took some photos of the finished painting. I am also including the client photo.
This is Flo, a lovely black labrador retriever. I completed her portrait a week ago for her owner. Flo loves her walks in the Irish hills and the client wanted this in the painting. The painting is 30 x 30 cm in size painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. Flo is sitting in some lovely heathers and long grasses. I love the colours in the photo, the rich browns and ochres work very well. The client was very happy with the finished painting. I hope you all like it too.
I took some photos of the painting in progress. I am including them below together with the reference photo and some photographs of the finished canvas.
I completed this portrait a few weeks ago. Things have been so busy in the studio, I haven’t had the time to update the blog. This is a painting of Isean, the lovely ginger cat. His owner commissioned the portrait as a keepsake. The painting was painted with acrylics on stretched canvas 30 x 30 cm in size. The client was very happy with the end result:
Just received the portrait and am delighted with it, you’ve perfectly captured his permanently slightly anxious expression, I’ll be recommending you! Thanks again, and well done xx
I completed this portrait two weeks ago. Toby is so lovely here, I really wanted to capture his beautiful expression. The client provided me with lots of reference photos and a lot of them involved Toby jumping up onto his owner’s lap. I thought it would be lovely to capture this in the painting. She was very emotional when she picked up the painting and the client was delighted his girlfriend liked the portrait so much and sent me a lovely email:
Just want to say a very big thank you for work on this, it looks fantastic and you could see for yourself how moved she was by its likeness. Will definitely have no hesitation in recommending you to friends/family in future
Thanks again, Stephen
The painting is 30 x 40 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. Toby was a black and white collie with gorgeous eyes. I used burnt umber and ultramarine blue for the blacks and the background.
