This is a pet portrait I worked on at the end of January. It is of an adorable yorkshire terrier. The size is 8″ x 10″ (20 x 25cm) and it is in graphite pencil on paper. He was really a joy to work on, he has a lovely gentle expression on his face. It was a commission for a client in Ireland.

Springer spaniel Adain’s finished portrait

This is a scan of the finished portrait of Aidan the springer spaniel. It worked out really well I think. I posted it off to the owner on Friday so hopefully he will be thrilled with it.

The pet portrait was painted with acrylic on hand stretched canvas. The portrait size is 12″ x 8″ (about an A4). This is an update for Aidan’s portrait. I have adjusted his colouring slightly to match with the photograph, as I originally had it too red. It is turning out to be quite a nice portrait, I think. I will be hopefully finishing it off tomorrow. I have to still add more detail to the fur around his ears, his body in the background, and of course the tennis ball. There are a few snowflakes on his face, which I will add last.

I have a few portraits to add to the portrait gallery, both pet portraits and family portraits. I will be updating the website soon with detailed scans of my recent commissions. I am also planning on introducing a smaller size for all portraits, which will be a little more affordable. So check back soon, there might be some offers too!

Springer Spaniel Aidan – portrait in progress

I have been progressing work on Aidan’s portrait. I had to put it aside as I had a lovely commission of a pencil portrait of a yorkshire terrier. I will post scan of the finished drawing soon.

I have now started detailing Aidan’s face – eyes and nose. I still need to adjust the colour slightly and work on his ears and body in the background. It is going to be a lovely portrait when finished. Below is a progress scan of the second stage of this dog portrait – acrylic on canvas – 12″ x 8″ in size.

Springer Spaniel Portrait – stage 1

This is a new painting I have started today. It is of the winning photograph from the Drogheda Animal Rescue Pet Photo Competition. The size is 12″ x 8″ (30cm x 20cm) and I am using acrylic paints on canvas. I have stretched and primed the canvas a couple of days ago, let it dry and sanded it for an even fine surface.

This is a lovely picture of a springer spaniel having great fun in the snow – reminds me of my own dog Bruce – he gets that same look on his face, kind of like, come and catch me if you can!

I have completed the first stage of this painting – underpainting. I have used raw umber, burnt umber and titanium white for some corrections. The next stages will involve detailing the fur and working on the background. Because it is a snowy scene, the face will show up really well.

Mounted Christmas portraits

I took a few photographs of some of the finished pet portraits and family portraits I worked on before Christmas this year. They were mounted in a snow white mount with backing board and posted. The portraits look so finished when mounted, the mount really does wonders for any drawing. I normally wrap the mounted portrait in a plastic cover so as not to damage the mount and drawing.

Since this is the last post of 2011, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you who have commissioned a portrait from True Image this year, and also all of you who follow my work in progress blog. I wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful New Year 2012!

Family portrait of two boys – final scan

This is the latest finished family portrait, which I have just scanned. I am also showing detailed view of each of the boys portrait.

The drawing is on 12″ x 10″ Fabriano paper 200g, drawn with graphite pencils HB, 2B and 4B. I will mount it and post some photographs of that later on.

Family portrait – stage 1

This is a new family portrait of two lovely boys I have been working on. I started on Friday with some outlines and it is still quite sketchy. I will be adding much more detail and shading today and tomorrow with a view to finish the portrait tomorrow afternoon, as it is a Christmas present.

The portrait is 12″ x 10″ (30 x 25cm) in size and I am working with a HB graphite pencil to start with.

Final scan of a family portrait

This is a scan of the finished family portrait. It is quite large so I have shown individual portraits too, to show more detail here.

It was drawn mostly with a HB graphite, adding a 4B for darkest areas. I have added a sanguine (sepia) tint into the drawing which is not as visible in the scan. Overall it makes the drawing much warmer as sometimes graphite on its own can be a bit cold.
