Father and Daughter Portrait

This portrait was completed a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoyed working on this painting. The colours in the photo are just beautiful and I wanted to capture the sunlight and the shadows it creates on the clothing and faces. The portrait features a father with his daughter at a skiing competition. The reference photo was a selfie as you can see from the arm reflected in the dad’s glasses.

The painting is 30 x 30 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I took some photographs of the painting in progress and the finished painting too. I hope you all like it.

Labrador Flo in heather

This is Flo, a lovely black labrador retriever. I completed her portrait a week ago for her owner. Flo loves her walks in the Irish hills and the client wanted this in the painting. The painting is 30 x 30 cm in size painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. Flo is sitting in some lovely heathers and long grasses. I love the colours in the photo, the rich browns and ochres work very well. The client was very happy with the finished painting. I hope you all like it too.

I took some photos of the painting in progress. I am including them below together with the reference photo and some photographs of the finished canvas.

Simmental Bull Painting

This is an acrylic painting of a simmental bull commissioned by a return client. I painted a painting of four sheep for her before Christmas. This painting is in acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 cm in size. The bull is a price winning animal and his portrait is given to his owner, the client’s father, for his sixtieth birthday.

Isean’s cat portrait

I completed this portrait a few weeks ago. Things have been so busy in the studio, I haven’t had the time to update the blog. This is a painting of Isean, the lovely ginger cat. His owner commissioned the portrait as a keepsake. The painting was painted with acrylics on stretched canvas 30 x 30 cm in size. The client was very happy with the end result:

Just received the portrait and am delighted with it, you’ve perfectly captured his permanently slightly anxious expression, I’ll be recommending you! Thanks again, and well done xx

Toby the collie

I completed this portrait two weeks ago. Toby is so lovely here, I really wanted to capture his beautiful expression. The client provided me with lots of reference photos and a lot of them involved Toby jumping up onto his owner’s lap. I thought it would be lovely to capture this in the painting. She was very emotional when she picked up the painting and the client was delighted his girlfriend liked the portrait so much and sent me a lovely email:

Just want to say a very big thank you for work on this, it looks fantastic and you could see for yourself how moved she was by its likeness. Will definitely have no hesitation in recommending you to friends/family in future

Thanks again, Stephen

The painting is 30 x 40 cm in size and painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. Toby was a black and white collie with gorgeous eyes. I used burnt umber and ultramarine blue for the blacks and the background.

Pet photo competition 2011 – winner

Below is the winning image of the Drogheda Animal Rescue pet photo competition. I will be painting a portrait from this photograph. The size will be 12″ x 8″ and it will be painted on canvas. I will be working on it in January 2012.

It is a priceless photograph, the personality of the dog really comes through in this shot. I just love the combination of the brownness of the fur with the snow flakes, and the look says it all. I am really looking forward to getting stuck into this one. Watch this space for progress photographs of the portrait.

Before Christmas I am going to work on two family portraits and a cat portrait, all in pencil. I have started on the first family portrait and I will post first progress images in the next couple of days.

Penguins painting in progress – Wildlife Art

Here are progress pictures of the penguins painting I’ve been working on. It’s taking much longer than I anticipated, but I think it’s turning out quite well. I will have a final scan ready today and I will post it later.

Humboldt Penguins Wildlife Painting

I started working on this portrait this week. The work is developing from a series of photographs taken by me in the Dublin ZOO last June. They are such an inquisitive pair, very curious indeed. These penguins are Humboldt Penguins, their natural habitat being the shores of Chile and Argentina. So they are not used to the snow at all. I’m placing them in their natural habitat on the shores showing the red rocks of South America. I felt they will look more at home than in the ZOO surroundings, although they did look very happy there too. Below is a step 1 of the painting process. I am hoping to have it finished by the end of this week. The painting is 12 x 16 inches in size and I am using acrylics.

Gorilla wildlife art painting

I’ve finished the gorilla painting last week and here is the final result. The intense stare gives the gorilla a great expression. The painting is in acrylic on canvas, the size of canvas is 12″ x 16″ (30cm x 40cm). Up next is more card designs and another wildlife.

Christmas Cards

I was asked to produce some Christmas card designs for a new online greeting cards company called MangoSalute. The decision was to produce fine art winter landscape paintings. Both paintings are in acrylic on paper to the size of 210mm x 297mm (A4). They will be both available as part of a Facebook greeting card application, so log in there and send some greetings! Happy Christmas all!
