Cat 'Kodi' Portrait

Cat Portrait Paintings in Acrylic on Canvas

Kodi was a lovely white cat described by his owner as 'slightly wild'. He was such a huge part of his owners life. Sadly he has passed away earlier in 2013. His owner's mum decided to commission a painting of Kodi as a brithday present for her daughter, Kodi's owner. She provided me with a lot of photographs of Kodi, even some from his kitten years - very adorable. She wanted something a little bit different from the portrait, so we decided to create a square portrait with a slightly unusual pose for Kodi. This allowed me to work in a more artistic way, really pushing the background back and detailing the eyes, face and ears. She was delighted with the result. You can read some of her feedback by scrolling down the page.

Kodi's Portrait with Detail

This is the final scan of the painting. I do my best to match the scan to the original painting, but of course the real thing is always the best. Some colours might appear different depending on your computer or device screen settings.

Reference Photograph

As I mentioned above, I received a lot of photographs of Kodi. This provided me with a clear image of what Kodi was like and felt I knew him when I was painting. It makes all the difference to have a clear photograph of the subject and really translates into a beautiful portrait capturing your pet's personality.

Kodi's Portrait in Progress

This painting took approximately 20 hours to complete and I started with a sketch with raw umber as usual. You can see photos of the process below. The initial sketch establishes the likeness of the subject. In the following stages, I added colour into the painting and detailed the fur, eyes and ears in a few thin layers of acrylic paint.
To finish off the painting, I painted the sides of the canvas with a colour to harmonize the overall portrait.

Client Feedback

"Hi Ivana, thank you, it's beautiful...
...How beautiful. It is looking really like Kodi!!! I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished painting. I think I'll have to include a packet of kleenex with the present!!!"
