Tinted Family Portrait
Family Portraits in Graphite Pencil
This is a large family portrait I was commissioned to draw in 2011. It was a Christmas present for client's sister and her family. The client wanted a lot of impact and she chose a large 60 x 50cm drawing. It was quite a challenge as I normally work in smaller sizes. I really enjoyed working on this family portrait, as the client also asked for colour highlights throughout. I used a burnt sienna pencil for some detail, especially in the darker shading. As a result, although quite subtle, the drawing looked quite warm.
Graphite Pencil Family Portrait with Detail
Below is a scan of the final drawing. I use a hp scanner and for larger images like this one, I scan it in several parts and then patch it up together using photo editing software. I match the colours and shading to the original piece as much as possible. If you require more information on commissioning your own family portrait or have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Client Photographs
To protect client privacy, I do not generally publish client photographs for family portraits. I worked from one photograph with some small adjustments and added subtle highlights of burnt sienna.
Family Portrait in Progress
Below are some progress photographs that were taken during the drawing process of this family portrait. They were then posted on the Art in Progress Blog for the client to see updates of their portrait commission. Since it was such a large drawing, it took quite some time to finish and get right. The finished portrait was then mounted in an off-white mount with backging board, ready for framing.
