I painted this painting a couple of months ago. It was commissioned by the lady’s friend as a gift for her 40th birthday. I had one photographic reference for the painting. The client was not sure where the photo was taken but we both agreed it must be somewhere in Ireland. I would presume the West of the country.
The painting is 25 x 20 cm in size. I used acrylic paints on fine grain Italian stretched canvas. I first painted a line sketch with yellow ochre. Once I established the likeness, I moved on to working in thin washes of paint. I wanted to really capture the light of the image and the way it captures the mountains in the background.
The client was thrilled with the finished painting. I took some photographs of the finished painting in my studio before posting the painting off to its new owner. I first applied two coats of removable satin UV varnish to protect the surface of the painting from dust.
I must say I really enjoyed working on this commission. The range of colour is quite vast from the saturated greens of the sunny grass to the dull darks of the mountains in the background, not forgetting the bright colours of the boys’ t-shirts. I used a limited palette throughout to keep the painting harmonious.
