I was reviewing my work for the last year or so and realised I haven’t posted a blog post in a few months. I have so much work that I have not shared and I will try and catch up.
This portrait is an acrylic painting of Bea and Siog, the two cute small dogs sitting happily on a sofa at home. Bea is the brown, black and white terrier and Siog is the black and white Jack Russell terrier. The client commissioned their portrait for her daughter, Bea and Siog’s owner. She wanted a small sized painting for her daughter’s small house. I worked from a number of photos for the painting. There was a gorgeous photo of Bea sitting on a sofa. Siog was a little more difficult as she seemed to be moving all the time 🙂 The client also asked me to straighten her paw and make her more prominent as ‘she normally has her paw over Bea’s’.
She was very happy with the finished painting and collected it directly from my studio a few days before gifting it to her daughter. The painting was completed in September 2020.
I worked at a size of 25 x 30 cm with acrylic paints on fine grain stretched canvas. I usually work in stages starting with a monochrome line sketch where I establish the likeness. For this stage I use yellow ochre. Once the likeness is established, I begin layering the canvas with block colour firstly to fully cover the entire canvas. Once the canvas is fully covered, I begin on the next layers and detail the main subjects fully. I use a lot more layers and detail on the main subjects to make them stand out from the background.
