I was commissioned to paint an aerial view of the Clanard Court Hotel a couple of months ago. The hotel is family owned and the painting was a gift for the family that set up the hotel 20 years ago last May.

Claire, the HR manager, and her team required me to remove the parking that is currently in front of the hotel building. I replaced this with some greenery including grass, trees and shrubs. I had a number of photographs to work from for this project. Some were quite outdated and did not include changes to the front of the building. There is a new glass extension to the coffee seating area which I added using some photos Claire took of the hotel. I helped myself with some Google street view images too.

The aerial photograph had some interesting depth to it created mostly by the dark clouds above the hotel and the distant rural landscape. I worked with this to give the painting flow and a sense of perspective.

Claire and her co workers were very happy with the finished painting which I hand delivered to the hotel as it is not too far away from me here in Kilcock.
HI Ivana! The consensus is that this is an amazing piece of work, we are delighted with it… Thank you so much for giving us such a fabulous painting, we can’t wait to see the actual product.

I used acrylic paint on stretched canvas for this piece. I created a line sketch in yellow ochre to begin with. I moved on to adding some basic colour blocks to the painting once I was happy with the level of detail in the painting, especially the building. There is a lot of windows 🙂

I worked on the surroundings first. This helps me judge the colour and tone of the building itself. The painting is 50 x 60 cm in size. My client asked me to add the date on the bottom of the painting which I did in paint. I had the painting framed in a double canvas frame in limed wood.

I have painted a good number of landscape and building paintings over the years. I must say, I really enjoy the challenge. They are so different to my portrait commissions and give me a great break from them. I always return to portrait work in a fresh way.
