Cat Portrait Painting – stage 1 & 2

Since finishing on Monty’s and Jessie’s portrait, I have started working on a lovely painting of a cat. His name was Kodi and sadly he has passed away earlier this year. The pet portrait of Kodi was commissioned as a birthday gift for his owner.

The portrait will be square in size 12 x 12 inches (30 x 30 cm) and will be painted with acrylic paints on stretched canvas. I have now progressed to the second stage of the painting process which includes adding some basic colours and refining the likeness of the subject. Below, I am including both 1st and 2nd stage of the painting.

Step 1 of the painting process is an initial sketch which I usually complete in one colour. This is to establish the basic shapes and likeness of the pet I am painting. By only using one colour I can concentrate on just the likeness and it makes the process much easier. I usually use raw umber diluted with water if necessary.

What did you like about the portrait?
