I work from my studio in Kilcock. It is a small room with shelves all around to put my finished and unfinished work onto. I like to give each work a few days to 'rest' before I completely finalise them and email my clients their portrait scans. On this page, you will find more information on how I work together with some progress photos and videos of my process. I discuss the materials I use and how I go about completing each piece of work. Because I work from photographs, I like to share them here too for comparison. You can subscribe to the blog and receive updates 3 to 4 times a month.
I finished working on Eddie’s portrait just yesterday and I scanned it today. It worked out very well I think. Eddie is just beautiful in the reference photo and I really wanted to capture his expression in the painting. I worked most of the detail into the head and shoulders,…
This week I am working on a new dog portrait. It is of a Jack Russell called ‘Eddie’. The canvas is 20 x 30 cm in size and I am working with acrylics as usual. I have been taking photographs of the canvas as I am progressing, from the initial…
I worked on this portrait a week ago. It was commissioned by the Gaelic Players Association as a gift for Donal Og’s retirement. They wanted a montage portrait that would show Donal Og throughout his career both as a player and as a manager. The centre of the portrait is…
This is a painting I completed back in June. It is of two lovely collies. It was commissioned as a birthday present for the clients’ friends’ 30th. The painting was painted with acrylics and the size of the canvas was 30 x 30 cm. I kept the background quite simple…
I have completed this painting a couple of weeks ago. It is a painting of the K-Club. It was commissioned as a wedding portrait for the client’s sister who got married there earlier this year. I worked with acrylics on stretched canvas as always. The painting was a wide landscape…
I have finished working on this portrait today. It is a graphite pencil drawing on Fabriano paper. The size is 25 x 35 cm. The portrait was drawn loosely with graphite pencils HB, 2B, 4B and 5B. I was working from an older photograph that was not very detailed, but…
I have started working on this portrait yesterday. I have completed the sketch with a HB pencil and I am now moving onto darker shading. The portrait is drawn with graphite on paper 25 x 35 cm in size.
This is my latest large sized portrait to come off the easel. It is 40 x 50 cm in size, painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I took my time working on this one as I knew how special it was going to be for the client. It was commissioned…
I completed this portrait a few weeks ago. The two cats are just lovely sitting on the stairs looking through the banisters. The client wanted to include a setting in the painting and this photo was just perfect for that. I kept it quite neutral for the black to pop…
I have completed this portrait a few weeks ago. It is of a lovely boxer called Alfie and his owner Jacqueline. It was commissioned as a wedding present for Jacqueline to remind her of Alfie, who sadly passed away. He was a very important part in her life and her…
