I work from my studio in Kilcock. It is a small room with shelves all around to put my finished and unfinished work onto. I like to give each work a few days to 'rest' before I completely finalise them and email my clients their portrait scans. On this page, you will find more information on how I work together with some progress photos and videos of my process. I discuss the materials I use and how I go about completing each piece of work. Because I work from photographs, I like to share them here too for comparison. You can subscribe to the blog and receive updates 3 to 4 times a month.
I was commissioned to paint this man’s portrait by his son who is living in the US. He asked me to create this portrait late last year. It is of his father, who sadly passed away in 2022. I posted the painting to his mother living in Dublin. It was…
This is the very first painting I worked on this year, the first week in January. My client originally hoped to have this portrait ready as a Christmas gift for her husband Ian, but I just didn’t have any more booking slots left. I didn’t want to rush the painting…
This is a pencil drawing composed from two photographs, one of baby Anna and the other of her now deceased grandparents. The drawing is 20 x 30 cm in size, approximately A4, and drawn with graphite pencil on paper. I was commissioned by Anna’s mum to draw this portrait for…
In August this year (2023) I was contacted by a client in Longford about a commission of her brother-in-law James. James sadly passed away in March 2023 from dementia at a very young age of 56. James’ brothers, my client’s husband, and his other brother based in the US, of…
I painted this portrait a few weeks ago. It was commissioned as a Christmas present for the mom in the photo. I had one photograph to work from for the painting that I received from the client, Jordan’s dad. He wanted me to capture the closeness the mom and baby…
Tuscany is one of those places that cannot be confused with any other. It is so picturesque, sometimes too much so and so easy to get sucked in when painting it. I thoroughly enjoyed this painting process though, from the distant hills to the foreground with the young family. I…
This is a portrait painting of Breffni Twohig (now Kelly), a cross country running athlete competing at the 2009 European Cross Country Championships in Dublin. Her father, Ronan, contacted me back in August to complete this portrait as a gift for her birthday at the end of October. It was…
I have been working on a large painting of a cross country running race over the last week and it got me thinking I have been commissioned to create sports portraits on more than one occasion. I thought I will put them all together in one post… I worked on…
I was commissioned to create this lovely family portrait a few weeks ago back in August. John, the client, contacted me with quite a tight deadline for his wife’s birthday present. It was such a lovely photo, I couldn’t refuse, so I worked really hard to get it finished in…
I completed this drawing a few weeks ago. It was commissioned as a gift for the young girl in the picture called Katlyn. Katlyn is my client’s girlfriend and she sadly lost her grandmother Rose last year. They were very close and naturally Katlyn misses her terribly. My client, Katlyn’s…
