Shih Tzu Dog Portrait

Ted’s pencil portrait is now finished. I really enjoyed the process, he seems like a very cute character. I love the way his curly fur flows in every possible direction. I tried to make the dark areas as dark as possible to differentiate between the white and black shades of his fur. I used a HB pencil as a base throughout and worked with a softer pencil on top of that for dark areas. For blackness I used a 4B and 5B graphite. The Fabriano paper really worked well for me with this one. I think I’m getting used to it now. It seems to soak up the pencil and it will be much more durable than a smooth cartridge I used to use. The portrait has now been collected by the client in time for Christmas. I hope Ted’s owner will be happy with it.

This is my last post before Christmas, so Happy Christmas everybody. I already have projects lined up for the New Year including finishing off the gorilla painting which got pushed off because of other projects.
