I worked on this painting a few weeks ago for a return client. He commissioned a painting of him proposing to his wife in Central Park in New York last year. This year he emailed me with a gorgeous photo of his wife and his two young daughters. The setting is just lovely, with flowers in the background and the girls holding baskets full of easter eggs they found on their hunt. The family were very happy with their painting and I will be painting another portrait for the same client later in the summer.
The painting is 30 x 30 cm in size painted with acrylics on stretched canvas. I had just the one photo to work from. There was a lot of colour in the photo which creates a colourful portrait.
The painting was challenging due to the small size and the level of detail required to capture all the individual elements. I started with a line sketch as usual and worked in thin washes of colour to build up the overall portrait. I added more detail to the faces and left the background quite loose. I didn’t want the flowers to overshadow the happy moment the mother shares with her daughters.
