This is a pencil drawing of Jamie, a 13 year old boy, pictured in the portrait ringing a bell in the hospital where he successfully completed his cancer treatment. The drawing was commissioned back in June this year as a gift for Jamie and his parents. My clients wanted to gift this portrait to their friends, Jamie’s parents, during Jamie’s family celebration. It was a last minute idea and I had just one week to complete the process. I was under pressure, but I really wanted to take the opportunity to draw Jamie after such long strenuous journey he must have undertaken at such a young age.
His family was so happy, understandably, and were delighted with such thoughtful gift.
The drawing is just 30 x 20 cm in size and drawn with graphite pencil on paper. It was mounted in a neutral coloured mount when finished and the client collected it from me just before the family celebration.
I removed some items from the background to keep the drawing simple and keep focus on Jamie and the act of him ringing the hospital bell. I included a faint sketch of the ostrich on one of the hospital walls and of course the bell. The clients wanted me to draw in the Mayo jersey Jamie is wearing in the photo as he is a big Mayo fan. I kept the hospital signage at minimum and removed the fire extinguishers from the photo. Here is the finished portrait in a mount before it was collected:
