Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait in Progress

I am currently working on a pencil portrait of a beautiful Bernese mountain dog called Gorby. Gorby has sadly passed away this year and he is missed terribly by his owners. This portrait was commissioned as a Christmas gift.

I am in the first few stages of the drawing, having worked out the composition and initial sketch. Progress photographs below show the progress so far. As Gorby has some specks of colour around his eyes and paws, I am adding this colour with coloured pencils. The client did not want to loose these highlights in a pencil drawing.

The portrait is on Fabriano paper and I am using Staedtler graphite pencils with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size is 30 x 25cm (12″ x 10″).

In the next stage of this dog portrait, I will add more detail and shading to Gorby’s body and face and also add some soft sketchy landscape background mainly grass with some foliage and trees.
