I always enjoy recreating vintage and old black and white photographs. They translate really well on paper in graphite pencil. The pencil seems to bring in a certain depth and texture to the traditionally taken images.
These two drawings were based on family photos, one taken in the fifties and the second in the eighties. The little boy in the first photo is the man in the second photo. He commissioned me to create these drawings for his home. Now in his nineties, he had previously commissioned a number of drawings from me, including one of an old cottage he grew up in and many portraits of his wife and himself similar to the one I drew this time.
The family drawings is of him and his deceased sister with their aunt. The second as I mentioned is of himself and his wife earlier in their relationship. His wife has sadly passed away. The family drawing is 20 x 15 cm in size, the couple drawing is 20 x 20 cm in size.
He was very pleased with the resulting portraits. His daughter collected the drawings when finished and wrote me a lovely email:
?Hi Ivana
Ann on behalf of her father on receiving the scanned images of the two pencil portraits, Mullingar, June 2024
Dad thinks the drawings are beautiful a really great job
He’s very happy with them
