90th Birthday Gift

I drew a portrait of this lovely lady a few weeks ago. It was commissioned as a present for her 90th birthday. The drawing is small in size at 20 x 20 cm drawn with graphite pencils on paper.

The lady in the photo was delighted and surprised with her gift. My client kindly emailed with some feedback. I always love to hear how my work is received not only by my client, but also the person being given them which is often the case:

Hi Ivana! It looks great. I am dying to see the original drawing… The drawing arrived and it’s great. I just have to get a frame for it now. It’s for her 90th birthday, I am sure she will love it… Just to let you know, she was delighted with the picture.

I worked on paper starting with a HB graphite pencil sketch to capture the lady’s likeness in the portrait. I then moved on to shading and finally detailing the drawing.

After a scan and approval from the client, I sprayed the drawing with a fixative which keeps the dust away and protects the drawing from smudges. I posted the drawing mounted in a neutral coloured mount.

I had one reference photograph to work from and another to assist me in capturing the lady’s likeness. I adjusted the reference image by moving the sign and arm to create a more compact viewpoint as the sketch was to be quite small in size. I wanted the lady’s face as large as possible in the drawing to capture her likeness as best as possible.
